Crime Watch Overview
Crime Watch began its formation in North Deering early in 2010. It's credited with being the first Crime Watch assembly off the Portland Peninsula. North Deering's Crime Watch is considered special because of its coverage over such a large geographical area. Also, North Deering is the only Portland neighborhood without a Portland Police community policing office in the area. Officer Andjelko Napijalo, Portland Police Department's Senior Lead Officer, and other city officials will be providing guidance and support to help maintain and build North Deering's Crime Watch.
The purpose of the North Deering Crime Watch is to take proactive measures in reducing and maintaining crime and other acts in the neighborhood. It has been proven that neighborhoods with established Crime Watch groups indeed have less crime. This type of program also brings neighbors and streets together for a common goal, creating a truly strong and involved community.
North Deering's goals is to one day have a "Captain" for every street in the neighborhood, creating a tight-knit group of people who are dedicated to communicating with one another if suspicious activity or events occur. Since its creation, there have been multiple crimes stopped as a result of dedicated neighbors and members of the North Deering Neighborhood Crime Watch.
